What to consider when buying a travel backpack for women
Size
The size of the backpack is probably of most importance when choosing a travel backpack for ladies. This is important for several reasons.
The capacity of the bag will determine how much you are able to take with you. Whether you require a day pack or a bag for backpacking over the next year will help you decide what size backpack you need.
Another thing to take note of is the actual dimension of the bag. The size of the bag will often determine how useful and comfortable it is for you, and you do not want to be stuck with a bag too big (as I have in the past – nightmare!). The bag should be suitable for your frame.
Straps
Often the backpack straps are the things that make the difference between a comfortable and uncomfortable bag. Part of why women dislike carrying a ladies travel backpack is due to the strain they can often place on your back and shoulders.
To spread the weight more evenly over your body, a padded hip strap is essential. A strap that goes around your hips will place the bag towards your center of gravity, and will work to relieve some of the strain off your back and shoulders.
Padded shoulder straps will also increase your comfort, and a strap between them over your chest can aid in distributing weight evenly.
Some bags also include a carry strap. Whilst this isn’t essential, it can be really handy especially when you are checking in at airport or getting on and off buses, etc.
Compartments
Compartments are essential for organizing yourself whilst traveling. Although it can be beneficial to have one compartment to utilize the maximum amount of space, this often doesn’t work well in practice.
The most important compartments, I believe, are internal ones for important documents and cash, a laptop (if you travel with one), a large main compartment and an area for a water bottle. These compartments alone will suffice. Be aware of too many compartments – this can make it hard to use the space effectively and can be annoying when you are trying to find something.
Access
Although added compartments are great, without easy accessibility they can become near to useless. This is why I believe the accessibility of the backpack to be of great importance when selecting an appropriate backpack for women.
The most important thing is that the main compartments opens to a large area. Water should also be easily accessible at all times, as it can become annoying to take off the backpack constantly to get a drink.
Easy access will not only make the bag easy to pack, but will allow for a quick and easy unpacking and organization whilst traveling.
Reviews of the best backpacks for women
Kelty Women’s Redwing 40-Liter Backpack review
The first backpack in my list for women is the Kelty Women’s Redwing backpack. There are many features of this backpack that make it one of the best backpacks women have to choose from. This is my personal choice of the best backpack for women – I use it all the time and love it!
When looking for a backpack, before anything else the capacity is important. This bag is 40 liters, and although this will allow for plenty of packing, the bag is still within an acceptable airline carry on size. It is amazing how much stuff can fit in here!
The standout features of this bag are its comfort. The bag has padded shoulder and hip straps, and a tightening chest strap to evenly distribute weight and take the load off your shoulders. This comfort makes it one of the best backpacking backpacks for women.
There is certainly not a lack of compartments with this bag. The bag includes many zippered pockets and secret compartments for more important documents and laptop, front and side zippered pockets for a drink bottle.
The bag is incredibly breathable with both a mesh backing and straps, and looks sporty and attractive. I also loves how the main compartment has a U zip which gives easy and quick access to everything. My only gripe is that it is not lockable.

Osprey Women’s Aura 65 AG Backpack review
The Osprey Women’s Aura 65 Ag backpack is certainly not the conventional backpack, but this is part of what makes it so great. The bag is in the competition as the best travel bag for women. What makes this backpack great is that although it is large, it is still perfectly suitable for shorter people. This is due in part to the bags ‘anti-gravity’ suspension harness that evenly distributes the weight of the bag. Once on, it is easy to almost forget you’re wearing a backpack.
The backpack is relatively long, but has a slim profile. Adjustable compression straps also allow you to tighten the load you’re carrying.
The bag conveniently has a clip for raincoats and a water bottle holder. However, the water bottle holder is slightly undersized.
However, I love what this backpack for ladies does offer, and it is definitely one of my favorites for women who want a bigger backpack.

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack review
I could almost say that the Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel backpack is my favorite ladies travel backpack. I don’t just say this for me personally, but I believe that the bag can suit all types of travel, and that is why I love it.This backpack is truly versatile. This is due to the bag including a carrying strap that allows you to carry the bag by your side, as opposed to on your back. This is beneficial when you need quick and easy access to the bag.
The bags straps are zipped in the back pocket, and allow for two different sizes for the perfect fit. Straps and the back of the bag are mesh and breathable, making them very comfortable. The suspension strap also includes a whistle, which is great to have whilst hiking.
Internally the bag includes two compression straps and safe pockets. There is also a laptop and tablet sleeve.
In combination with the above, the bag is carry-on compliant for most airlines. This bag offers so much, and is perfect for everyone.

Doleesune 42l Internal Frame Pack review
The final backpack in the list may also be the best travel backpack for women. The Doleesune 42I Internal Frame backpack is not only superficially attractive, coming in three bright and identifiable colors but has been designed to make maximum use of space and to minimize discomfort. The bags main compartment is accessed via a green zip that bows around the bag, opening up to a large area for both easy packing and unpacking. The bag also has large side pockets perfect for a water bottle.
What I think adds towards this being the best backpack for women is just how comfortable the bag is. No one could complain about the comfort of this backpack. The hip suspension strap is a large, padded mesh, with thick shoulder straps and a mesh back. The bag is therefore great in warm climates as it is so breathable. The bag is also waterproof.
The Doleesune 42I is perfect for long trips, and can even be used as carry on in most cases.
