As you all know, I am a big on travel with kids. I am also always looking for better ways to capture our travel memories so that our kids can hopefully remember some of their adventures when they are older and realise what amazing things they have done.
I have always loved the idea of having some professional photos take on our travels but strangely it had never even occurred to me that organising a photographer overseas would be easy. Thankfully, when I caught up with the lovely Sofie from Wonderful Wanderings, she told me all about Flytographer – a travel photography service which specialises in connecting travellers with photographers all around the world.
The next day I contacted them and before we knew it, we were posing in front of what must be the most recognisable structure in the world taking some very special family photos. We couldn’t be happier!

How does it work?
It is very easy.
You:
- Go to the Flytographer website.
- Pick a destination (there are over 140).
- Choose a package (they range from US$250 for 30 minutes and 15 photos).
- Choose a photographer.
For the destinations we were looking at, there are multiple photographers and you can view their work to pick which one suits you best. I personally looked for photographers that had great family photos as I know dealing with kids is not easy!
You also get the opportunity to write any requests you have such as whether you would like a lot of direction, candid shots, etc. I made it clear I wanted some head shots of myself and great family shots – that’s what we got. There are some fabulous photo galleries on the site to inspire you.
After it was all confirmed, we got a confirmation email with all the details for our shoot including exact directions on where to meet up.
On the day, we met up with our photographer, Goncalu, Silva. We went though our requirements again, discussed how to go about it and then started shooting!
I generally feel very anxious about situations like this but it was fine. Goncalu was easy to talk to and professional.
5 days later, we received a link to our photos to download via email. Simple.
Our tips for a great Flytographer family photo shoot
- Great clothes – they have a great guide on their site. If there is one thing we would change, it would be what we were wearing. We knew this before the shoot too, but we just did not have anything more suitable. Occasionally travelling carry on only has its drawbacks!
- Take spare stockings if you wear them! Mine broke on the train on the way there.
- Explain to the kids what is going to happen beforehand. We showed them the site and sample photos to get them excited too.
- Promise lots and lots of bribes to get preschoolers on their best behaviour. We promised they could pick a special treat each from the shops and go back to their favourite playground. It worked well.
- A glass of wine beforehand doesn’t hurt if you are like me and have anxiety attacks over photos!
Our verdict
We are so happy we did this. We have loved looking back over the photos together, I am happy to have a head shot of myself for professional purposes and, when we get back home, I can’t wait to have a massive Paris photo of us on the wall.

Flytographer also offered us these photos in return for an honest review. We would have paid for it anyway – I think it’s a fabulous service!
