Hobart is my home town. I lived my first 21 years in this scenic city built between the Derwent River and the mountains. I have been back many times since. However now that I have no family living here, it is rare. On the upside, this means that I wasn’t able to stay with family this time. Why is that an upside? Because I was able to take up the Sullivans Cove Apartments on their offer to check out their very impressive apartments. I have never stayed anywhere so fabulous.
The Sullivans Cove Apartments are located in 5 different buildings around the wharf area in Hobart. This is a fabulous location for a Hobart adventure. The wharf area is a very quick walk into the centre of town (it’s always called town in Hobart, not city). It is also a great area to hang out with some of Tasmania’s best seafood on offer. Additionally, it is walking distance to Salamanca Market – some of the apartments are actually on Salamanca Place, many clubs and bars and the ferry ride out to MONA.

Our apartment
We stayed in the IXL Apartments. I was impressed from the moment we entered the building from the internal car park. I have never seen such a cool “hallway” in an apartment building. It felt like we were walking along a suspended walkway with glass panels in the floor. The kids were initially a little bit freaked out by the small glass panels with views looking down, but the whole thing was very impressive.
If I thought the hallway was impressive, the apartment was unreal. I don’t think I have ever been in such an amazing apartment.
The first thing I noticed was the great lighting and the big open spaces. The next was the fabulous gourmet kitchen. Then there were the views, the great couches, the laundry, the list goes on and on. My favourite thing was probably the panels we could use to put the blinds up and down and set the lighting and temperature. Everything was very well done and to a superb quality.
I also liked all the little touches. There were great decorative items and things like salt and pepper grinders and cling wrap. I had to put some of the decorative items up high in case the kids damaged them, but otherwise the place was very kid friendly. There was also a big mini bar and nice toiletries. For people who like great beds and sheets, you will also love it here.
We stayed in an executive two bedroom apartment but it came with two bathrooms and a laundry area and would be bigger than our home. In addition to all the open space, I loved all the cupboards. It is nice when we can put everything away.
There was also a big balcony complete with a bbq and table and chairs with views over Hobart and the wharf area. I really want to come back in the warmer months and have a big BBQ while raiding the mini bar and eating outside with the views.
I also liked all the fancy touches – like heated towel racks. Our ensuite was actually a double shower with two different controls for two different shower “heads”. I wrote that in inverted commas because the water actually came down through grating in the ceiling. It is hard to explain, but it was very cool! The other bathroom had a great big bath for the kids.
Facilities at the Sullivans Cove Apartments
The staff at the Sullivans Cove Apartments are very friendly. They supplied lots of information about the surrounding area such as a list of dining establishments. There is also good wifi. There is free car parking available, but request this on booking.
One of the best things about Sullivans Cove Apartments for families is that the apartments range in size from one to four bedrooms. This is great news for larger families. It is rare to find such big apartments on offer in such a central location.
The downside of the Sullivans Cove Apartments is that if you are looking for a hotel like environment with a concierge and help on hand, then they do not have this 24/7. The reception is open only business hours, 7 days a week and in a different building to some of the apartments – although it was only a couple of minutes walk away in a connecting building from us. The staff are very helpful when available though, and we prefer being in a more independent and private environment. It all depends what you are looking for.
The kids?
I think the best way to sum up what the kids thought about our stay here is that S asked if we could move in. Unfortunately not, but they did have a great stay here. There was lots of room for them to run around, lots of cushions to play with and they had their own room and some drawers to put their toys in.
Our verdict?
We just loved these apartments. We won’t want to stay anywhere else when we return to Hobart. We loved the modern touches, the layout, the convenience, the location, the building. Everything really. Our apartment had everything we needed or could want, and lots of cool modern touches for us to play with.
