If there was one place I have always wanted to stay in Tasmania, it is Grindelwald. Grindelwald is a small town just north of Launceston in the Tamar Valley. What makes it stand out from the crowd? You can probably guess by the name. Grindelwald is modeled on a small Swiss village and it does a very cute job!

Grindelwald
Grindelwald is a lovely little Swiss village near Launceston Tasmania, just perfect for families. There is a cute row of shops (pictured above and below), a large bistro and bar and a large range of both indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. It is also home to the excellent Aspect Tamar Valley Resort which is in the centre of everything.
The things to do in Grindelwald Tasmania list is long. There is a golf course, mini golf, canoes, paddle boats, tennis, a playground, a pirate ship, some very big jumping pillows, peddle go karts and mountain bikes. The shops include an ice cream shop, chocolate cafe, bakery, clothes shop, newsagent, day spa and hairdresser.
When we visited here when I was a child, I was amazed by the whole place and used to beg my parents to let us stay here. It seemed magical to me.
Aspect Tamar Valley Resort
You can visit Grindelwald as a day guest, but it does make an excellent base to either just enjoy staying in the one spot for awhile or to explore the surrounding area. Grindelwald is just 15 minutes from Launceston and is close to all the attractions of the Tamar Valley like Tasmania Zoo, Seahorse World and many great wineries.
The Aspect Tamar Valley Resort Northeast Tasmania is a great option for families as there are a range of room types from hotel style rooms (like we stayed in) to self contained villas or chalets. These are big and range up to three bedrooms.
Our room
Our room was a good size and came complete with a queen and a single bed. There was plenty of room for the three of us. We had tea and coffee making facilities, a bar fridge, a big bathroom, table and chairs, a desk and lots of storage space. There are free dvds and it is possible to hire a microwave. When I looked online, this room was only $89 a night, and I think this is exceptionally good value.
Facilities
In addition to everything listed above, there is a heated indoor pool, spa, sauna and a gym. We were there in the middle of winter and it was nice and warm. The kids pool was perfect for my little ones and for the first time, it worked without me needing to get in – bonus!
Additionally, there is room service, high chairs, and cots and baby sitting at an extra charge. There is wifi in the lobby which we were also able to connect to in our room. Otherwise, there is an option to pay for broadband in the hotel suites and dial up in the villas and chalets. There is also a guest laundry and an in house laundry.
We had the buffet breakfast in the bistro by the lake which was great. Reception was friendly and helpful and able to accommodate our late check out request.
The kids?
The kids loved loved loved the pool and the pirate ship. They loved all the open space, the mini golf, everything really. It was nice to watch the kids love this place like I did as a kid.
My verdict?
I loved it here. It was a perfect place for us to have a little break after our busy time rushing around the rest of the state. I love the novelty factor of the theme, and Aspect Tamar Valley Resort really is just a perfect option for families. I am not aware of anywhere else in Tasmania with so many easy options within a few minutes walk of your room. It is also incredibly good value.
