With a new baby, I decided a new stroller was in order – and I am so glad I did! I love the Mountain Buggy Nano travel stroller.

I bought this stroller as I am going to be doing quite a lot of travel with baby J alone and with other kids. Previously, we have travelled with umbrella strollers. They do a great job, but it has been annoying. This is primarily because it is an extra piece of luggage which has pushed us over the edge of what we can comfortably manage. We only have so many hands!

I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a purpose built travel stroller which is not of the umbrella variety as I wanted a stroller I could carry over my shoulder without taking up a hand. This means I can travel comfortably by myself with a child, the folded stroller and a suitcase. It has worked out very well so far!

I weighed up several different options – the Mountain Buggy Nano, Babyzen Yoyo Stroller and the Quinny Yezz Stroller as they all have the compact fold I was after.

I needed a stroller that was suitable from birth so the Quinny Yezz was out. Both the other options are suitable from birth if you buy an attachment. I considered them both and decided on the Mountain Buggy Nano, primarily because I saw no advantage to the Babyzen Yoyo and it is a lot more expensive. I am glad I bought the Mountain Buggy Nano as it has worked our perfectly!

Mountain Buggy Nano all set to go

There is much to love about the Mountain Buggy Nano as well as a few things that are necessary compromises to have such a compact and lightweight product. There are also a couple of things that could be improved – keep reading my Mountain Buggy Nano review to learn them all!

Compact, easy fold and an included travel bag

The biggest plus about this stroller is its beautiful compact fold. It’s also quite easy to fold and unfold – I did it without reading any instructions or assistance when trying it out in store.

The fold is amazing. It’s nice and compact and it fits into a custom travel bag which is included with the stroller. The wheels easily pop on and off to make it even more compact and they fit inside the bag to keep everything together. The folded dimensions are 20″ x 12″ x 22″.

The thing I love most, however, is that it is small and lightweight enough that I can carry it over my shoulder leaving my hands free. This is the primary reason I bought this stroller and I am not disappointed. It means I have been able to take the stroller, my baby, another child, a carry on back pack and a suitcase without any problems and still being able to hold the hand of my other child.

The other big bonus is that it makes is super easy to fit into whatever car you are driving. If the boot is over flowing then it also fits into the space in front of baby J’s car seat in the back seat.

My only complaint is that it’s a two handed fold. This is stopping me from being able to use it at airports when I travel alone with baby J as it would be annoying to fold it up for security while holding baby J. Otherwise, I don’t think it matters much.

I have read mixed reviews about taking it on board as carry on luggage. Since we didn’t want to use it at the airport anyway as yet, we have always checked it in so I can’t comment on this.

Lightweight and compact

The Mountain Buggy Nano stroller is not just compact when folded. It is also compact when in use while still being big enough that it fits my four year old comfortably. I have not found a space that it doesn’t fit yet in small shops and cafes.

At only 13 pounds it is lightweight and it’s been great for me with recovering from a c section as lifting it is not a problem at all. It’s also good in times like in the photo above where I could have only have taken that photo by carrying the pram and baby J up and down stairs. My back was very glad that it’s light!

Comfortable and roomy seat

The seat is more generous than it looks since it easily fits my four year old. It sits kids up to 44 pounds. The seat itself is 13″ wide and 18″ high. The distance from the seat to the canopy is 26″ which is a very tall canopy and should fit tall children fine.

This is another reason I picked this stroller since I am blessed with big kids.

Good recline

For a compact travel stroller, the Nano has a great recline. It’s enough to keep most kids happy I imagine. It’s not flat so not suitable for a newborn. It is recommended for babies 6 months but I find it is a deep enough recline that nearly 4 month old baby J is fine with it.

Storage basket

There is a storage basket underneath. It’s on the small side but it will fit essentials.

Adjustable leg rest

There is also an adjustable leg rest with plenty of space for bub.

Travel system ready

One of the big pluses of this stroller is that you can attach an infant car seat without any additional attachments. It’s also possible to buy a Cocoon Carrycot which is a bassinet attachment. With either of these, the stroller becomes suitable from birth.

We bought the cocoon so we could use our Nano from the day baby J was born. It has worked out very well.

It’s comfortable and easy to attach. It folds down flat and is lightweight so it is also very easy to travel with. It fits in our suitcase. J also looks super cute when I carry him around in it – it makes me think of Paris Hilton with her dog in a hand bag 🙂

It’s great to have another option for a bed. Since baby J sleeps really well as long as he is flat and wrapped, we use this as our main stroller at home too. It was also super handy when we went to a dolphin show in Coffs Harbour. Strollers weren’t allowed so I just disconnected the cocoon and baby J kept sleeping away at the show.

The downside is that it is quite compact and I was worried that he would outgrow it before he would be old enough to sit in the stroller without it. Thankfully, that has not happened but it may be an issue with a long baby.

Good sun canopy

There is a good size sun canopy on this stroller and you can buy strollers that have three different coloured sun canopies – ruby (pictured here), blue or black. You can also buy sun and rain covers. I have both, although I have not used them. There is no need when you are using the cocoon and we have used the Nano and Cocoon in torrential rainfall in Thailand and baby J has not got wet.

My biggest complaint about this stroller is the sun canopy. When the sun canopy is up, it rests on the handlebars which I find very annoying when pushing.

Great maneuverability and good on flat surfaces

I have found in my Mountain Buggy Nano stroller review that this stroller has great maneuverability and is easy to push on flat surfaces. However, the small wheels definitely make it tougher to push on uneven surfaces. We have some cobblestones near our house that are hard work and I won’t mention how I went taking it to the beach. This is the compromise that needs to be made to keep it compact and lightweight.

The front wheels can be locked into place which makes this easier. There is also an easy to use brake on the back wheels. There is rear wheel suspension.

My verdict

S gives it a go in Coffs Harbour

I am very happy with my Mountain Buggy Nano. It meets my main needs – a stroller I can carry over my shoulder when travelling that will fit my child from birth until he no longer needs it. It is also a nice looking, compact stroller that I enjoy using at home.

Has it been worth the price? Definitely! I am sure this stroller is going to get a lot more use in the years to come. If you are looking for a compact stroller, this is a great choice.
